As I entered the studio, Erin Cowan made a beeline right toward me, wanting to make sure we'd properly met before class began. I always love when a teacher recognizes a new face and makes the time and effort for a proper introduction.

As we began the class quietly in Virasana, Erin reminded us that so often we are leaning into our front body, much like eagerly reaching into the future. Or, perhaps we fall into our  back body, sinking into our past. This lovely reminder served to invite us to find the place in the middle, where we can experience our breath with fullness and expansion in this moment.

Erin's voice really is such a beautiful one. You hardly realize you have been holding such a strenuous, heat generating pose until you come out and feel the beads of sweat forming. Or maybe the sweat factor was exacerbated by the fact this class was on the hottest, stickiest morning on record! Either way, I felt like I could listen to her voice forever.

Erin's class was like sipping from a tall, refreshing glass of lemonade. Don't get me wrong, I was drenched with sweat and working my booty off. What I mean is that she really took the time and space to make sure we were able to dwell in each pose, having the time and space to really breathe and extend with an intention of being rooted in that place in between -- the present. What a refreshing gift.

The sequence of poses was expertly woven to prepare the body in the most clever and efficient way. As I moved into each pose, I'd felt the previous pose had done exactly what it needed to get me to the next. It truly takes time and experience to become artful in this skill.

Our pinnacle pose was handstand preparation, or inverted L-pose, at the wall. You could see her eyes twinkle as she watched a relatively inexperienced student get right into the pose with such beauty and grace. As the student came out of the pose, feeling so empowered and encouraged by Erin, you could see the desire beginning to burn to go a little deeper. Within moments, the student took flight right up into a handstand at the wall. Her smile was beeming and her eyes said it all. This is why Erin so obviously loves to teach. To guide her students in such a way that they can experience their own inner strength and pure joy obviously fills her with wonder and delight.

You can find Erin on the schedules at Moksha Riverwest, Lakeview and Logan Square. You can also book a private lesson with Erin by emailing her directly. Check her out. The way she so graciously welcomes you in and holds the space for your own unfolding is sure to make her a fast favorite for you, too!

Already a student of Erin's? Tell me about your experience in her class. I'd love to hear from you!
